Understanding Male Pattern Hair Loss

By Rey El

If you are like the bulk of men in the world you could have been noticing that your hairline has started receding or thinning. Chances are this is due to male pattern hair loss (MPHL). Men often begin to notice the signs around the age of 20 to 45. In some cases it can begin earlier and slowly progress over the years. According to the latest studies male pattern hair loss is caused by your family history and a hormone named dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

The primary purpose for this article is to help men afflicted with thinning or balding hair to understand about male pattern hair loss (MPHL), as well as the role that dihydrotestosterone (DHT) plays in contributing to MPHL, and what can be done about it.

What You Need To Know About Your Hair Loss

Your hair is essentially made of 4 key components:

- Hair shaft - the identifiable area of hair that you see on your head.
- Follicle - the part of your skin that's responsible for growing hair.
- Hair root - the part of your hair that is embedded in a hair follicle.
- Dermal papilla - structure containing receptors for male hormones that will make a contribution to baldness.

Understanding The Hair-Grow Cycle

As part of the ordinary hair-growth cycle, hair that's lost is continually replaced by new hair. Anything that interrupts your individual growth cycle can and sometimes does lead to alopecia. Your hair grows to its maximum length, then will break away from the dermal papilla, a new hair will then start to grow.

Here are the three stages or cycles of hair growth:

STEP 1

Anagen - your hair grows actively and reaches its maximum length within 2 to 6 years

STEP 2

Catagen - During this 2 to 4 week transitional phase, your hair breaks away from the dermal papilla and stops growing.

STEP 3

Telogen - After a rest of approximately 2 to 4 months, a new hair will start growing and at last pushes the old hair out.

You are now armed with the basic understanding of male pattern hair loss. Lets put this knowledge to use and take action. Living with thinning hair is no longer an option. Thanks to todays technology you can have a full head of hair just like you once had.
